Biologists from the United Kingdom think they've decoded the mystery of all the gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) running around the United States with black fur.
The bit of genetic code that causes the gray squirrel species to turn black, they showed, is an allele, or a variant form of a specific gene, called MC1R∆24. But that allele doesn't seem to come from gray squirrels. Instead, they showed, the gray squirrel MC1R∆24 allele is "identical" to the MC1R∆24 allele found in another species, fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) — one of two mutations that occasionally cause big, usually reddish fox squirrels to turn black. In a paper published online July 11 in the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology, the researchers showed that the color-changing allele likely originated in fox squirrels and moved over to gray squirrels through interbreeding.
Whatever the case, they wrote, black fur remains a rare thing for squirrels in North America, occurring at rates of less than 1% in the two species. But already, they noted in a statement, it's made its way over to the United Kingdom — likely through black squirrels from the U.S. that escaped from private zoos in the U.K.

ACTIVITY
If you like to feed the birds and dislike when the squirrels take over, building a squirrel adventure course may be for you.
I loved the presentation of the above video, shared to me by my partner. We had a lot of fun talking about it and how we would make a course. A good way to spend quarantine and be engaged in an experiment.
Enjoy. Make sure you enlist help and have permission. You cold do the same kind of activity centered on mice, a pet, or other. Be Creative.

Booths for Tests that Mass General has implemented in the Boston Area. A great look at innovating in the time of Covid 19 and Global communities helping each other for everyones success.
At Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, hospital leadership saw news reports on Yangji's booths and asked an in-house team to create a version, hoping to better protect their health workers and conserve precious protective gear. A bit of Googling and two phone calls later, hospital staff connected her with Kim via email.
"I remember it was 10 p.m., we're all frustrated, up all night, trying to figure out how to make this work," says Nour Al-Sultan, a business strategy analyst at the MGH Springboard Studio, the team of researchers and designers tasked with reverse engineering the booths. “I go to bed, and I wake up the next morning, and Dr. Kim is the one who answers all of my questions."
MGH has now installed about eight booths at three hospitals in the Boston region. According to preliminary data, they've reduced the need for protective gowns, which are in short supply, by 96 percent, saving more than 500 gowns a week. The MGH team is now working with colleagues in Uganda to help them develop their own versions of the booths.

“The fact that he took the time to provide me with such generous insights is just a testament to this spirit of global collaboration against the pandemic," Al-Sultan says.

When we saw the first cases in China, we thought, Okay, we might need a vaccine, so we have to start immediately. But I anticipated having more time to work on it, to maybe put it on the shelf, if it would ever be needed. As we were working on it, we started to realize we really cannot lose a day.

ANIMALSHOW-TO Bee Keeping
...If they don’t know what they’re walking into, they often end up killing their bees. When your beehive dies, that’s significant. You can actually do harm to other beekeepers in the area. If you let your hives get sick, for example, it can actually spread that to other colonies.

What You Need to Know to Start Backyard Beekeeping, your bees will pollinate your garden for necessary pollination and better growth. In October you can collect the Honey they have produced with their hard labor.
Seed Saving and Seed companies to buy online from

In agriculture and gardening, seed saving is the practice of saving seeds or other reproductive material from vegetablesgrainherbs, and flowers for use from year to year for annuals and nutstree fruits, and berries for perennials and trees. This is the traditional way farms and gardens were maintained for the last 12,000 years (Wikipedia, 2017).  Benefits of seed saving include: engaging in the cycle of life, preserving heirloom varieties, encouraging genetic diversity, and saving money. A few tips for storing seeds are: gather seeds and let them dry on newspaper for a few days. Mark seeds with a post-it-note so you remember what type of seed they are. Remember, if you want to save your own seeds, you’ll need to plant open-pollinated varieties. They’ll come back while hybrids won’t. Keep seed packets in plastic food storage bags, plastic film canisters, Mason jars with tight-fitting lids, or glass canisters. Once you’ve gotten your storing container, store in a cool and dry environment.  Store each year’s seeds together and date them because most seeds last up to about three years.

From the Farmer's Almanac.
We often think of gardens as symmetrical, well-tended, planned, and maybe even tame. Flowers are colorful borders. Plants are trimmed and organized. Ornaments are carefully plotted and considered. But what if a garden were irregular, unfenced, arbitrary, and unkempt? This seemingly chaotic approach to gardening isn’t as outlandish as it sounds.

Long before Europeans came to North America, indigenous people cultivated a broad array of crops, including corn, tomatoes, and potatoes. And, unlike the neat rows of European gardens, native plots appeared to be randomly arranged. That’s up for argument, however. These “chaotic” gardens made sense. Plant diversity, unlike monoculture cropping, discourages and diverts insects. Bean, corn, and squash plants work in conjunction: beans add nitrogen to the soil, corn stands as a trellis, and squash leaves retain moisture and limit weed growth.

Native growers seldom harvested an entire plant, leaving enough roots or tubers on nutritious edible perennials and annuals to regrow or self-seed. Fruit, seeds, and greens were plentiful in their seasons, and root crops held their place underground in Earth’s natural storage cupboard, ready to be dug up when needed.

Native American farmers used fire to clear land for planting, increase sunlight, and improve the soil. The ashes of shrubs and leaf litter benefited useful plants, such as blueberries and huckleberries. In effect, Native farmers were permaculturists, who shaped highly productive forest ecosystems.

Today, your garden can take on a similar role, benefiting you and the planet at the same time. Find out how easy it is (and how much less work it can be!) to grow a Native garden, including what to look for, what to plant, and how to increase bird and insect life in the 2020 Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Guide, which comes with your membership in The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club.
