AleK Wek,

"When I look back at that time, so many things come to mind. I felt that these memories, going through war at a young age, were a story that needed to be shared. I knew I really needed to find a publisher to put it into writing and that is how the book [the memoir Alek: My Life From Sudanese Refugee to International Supermodel] came about after the documentary.

The process itself was very difficult. There were days I had to stop because I had to address deeply painful and traumatic moments, including losing my father. All of that was very raw. I knew however, that it was important to have those parts in there because it would not be as authentic without the honesty. And after having gone back to Sudan with my mother and having filmed the documentary, there was no way that I could have just transitioned right back to work as normal. It is like you can cry and you can laugh, and then you can grow from it. So that is what I did."

On becoming a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

The first time I came into contact with the UNHCR was in South Sudan when the war was going on. The whole town was in ruins, which is why we had to flee. When I started my career in fashion, the war was still going on. So I sent a fax to the organization and I made it clear that I wanted to utilize my voice to discuss what was happening in South Sudan or Sudan in general—at the time there was no South Sudan.

I continue to work with them, particularly when it comes to the importance of education [and] girls. With feminine hygiene, for example, it’s especially important as many girls do not go to school when they are on their period because of the stigma. For me, it’s always been vital that I use the platform I’ve been afforded in fashion to shed light on important issues.

I adore Demna and the way he looks at me, the way he celebrates me. It is authentic, so respectful. That’s something priceless. I always say that the reason I chose to stay in fashion is because I do not compromise myself, and I do not compromise others. And he truly has that.

On returning to South Sudan

When you leave such a horrific situation like civil war as I did, at some point it feels really important to return to the place where you were born. It was kind of like having closure, because when we left Sudan we knew we would not be able to reenter the country. Once the peace agreement was in place and it was possible to go back, I had the opportunity of meeting a producer and director who both worked on documentaries about war. And I told them about my idea of wanting to go back with my mother.

My mother is just so gorgeous and has had nine kids. She was truly excited to show me where it all began. That place had become a police station, though there was still the same tree in the yard that I remember from my childhood. When I look back at that time, so many things come to mind.

Bertrand Russell (May 18, 1872–February 2, 1970)

The moral thing I should wish to say… is very simple. I should say: love is wise, hatred is foolish. In this world, which is getting more and more closely interconnected, we have to learn to tolerate each other. We have to learn to put up with the fact that some people say things that we don’t like. We can only live together in that way and if we are to live together and not die together, we must learn the kind of charity and the kind of tolerance which is absolutely vital to the continuation of human life on this planet.

Complement with Russell’s kindred-spirited contemporary Albert Camus on the three antidotes to the absurdity of life — the third of which is an exquisite affirmation of Russell’s moral bequeathal — and a poetic counterpart in Maya Angelou’s “A Brave and Startling Truth,” and then revisit Russell on how to heal an ailing and divided world, our mightiest defense against political manipulation, what makes a fulfilling life, and his immensely insightful Nobel Prize acceptance speech about the four desires driving all human behavior.

Science/Disease

Parkinson’s Disease and Concussion

https://www.popsci.com/parkinsons-disease-brain-injury-concussion/?CMPID=ene042218

The study, spearheaded by a group of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that the increased risk was contingent on how severe the brain injury was, but even a mild brain injury raised the likelihood of Parkinson's by as much as 56 percent. The UCSF team argues it's the biggest evidence to date connecting mild traumatic brain injuries—which often come in the form of concussions—to Parkinson's, and follows in the footsteps of what the team had found in prior research.

That's a staggering assessment when you consider that each year, 42 million people worldwide are thought to sustain a concussion.

Doctors have spent centuries studying Parkinson's, a neurodegenerative disorder that disrupts the nervous system and affects motor control. Yet the underlying causes are still largely unknown, although most research points to a complex web of genetic factors (15 percent of diagnosed individuals have a family member with Parkinson's as well) interacting with environmental factors. We do know Parkinson's is more common in men, and the incidence increases with age—the disease afflicts 1 percent of the population over 60, and 5 percent of the population over 85.

The UCSF team came to these conclusions after studying the 12-year health records of 325,8730 American military veterans aged 31 to 65 at the beginning of the study, whose health information was stored in U.S. Veterans Health Administration databases. The researchers defined a mild TBI as a loss of consciousness lasting zero to 30 minutes, a moment of altered consciousness within 24 hours after injury, or temporary amnesia lasting from zero to 24 hours after injury. A moderate-to-severe TBI was defined as a loss of consciousness for more than 30 minutes, altered consciousness for more than 24 hours, or amnesia lasting for more than 24 hours.

At the beginning of the study, none of the veterans exhibited signs Parkinson’s or dementia, although roughly half had already sustained a brain injury of some kind. Of the 1,462 who were diagnosed with Parkinson’s before the end of the 12 year span of the study, 949 had previously sustained a TBI. After controlling for age, prior health conditions, and other factors, the researchers deduced a mild TBI raised the risk of Parkinson’s by 56 percent, while a moderate-to-severe injury increased the risk by 83 percent. Any kind of TBI led to a 71 percent increased risk for Parkinson’s.

Moreover, for those with a history of any brain injury, Parkinson’s disease was diagnosed, on average, two years earlier than those who had not.

Pause for thought. Mountain Analogy.

9/6/20 Daumal writes. Brain Pickings, Maria Popova.

Alpinism is the art of climbing mountains by confronting the greatest dangers with the greatest prudence.

Art is used here to mean the accomplishment of knowledge in action.

Upon this conceptual foundation Daumal builds his alpine allegory of life. In a passage evocative of that splendid Seamus Heaney verse — “On your way up, show consideration / To the ones you meet on their way down. / The Latin root of ‘condescension’ / Means we all sink.” — he writes:

2e292385-dc1c-4cfe-b95e-845f6f98c2ec.png

You cannot always stay on the summits. You have to come down again…

So what’s the point? Only this: what is above knows what is below, what is below does not know what is above. While climbing, take note of all the difficulties along your path. During the descent, you will no longer see them, but you will know that they are there if you have observed carefully.

There is something profound that the alpine shares with the telescopic: the gift of perspective — a gift that, once granted, cannot easily be revoked; once we have seen, once we have known, we cannot easily unsee and unknow, and so we cannot easily lose our position in space and sense. Daumal writes:

2e292385-dc1c-4cfe-b95e-845f6f98c2ec.png

There is an art to finding your way in the lower regions by the memory of what you have seen when you were higher up. When you can no longer see, you can at least still know.

eteladnan_mounttamalpais2.jpg

Etel Adnan: Mount Tamalpais, 2000. (Callicoon Fine Arts, New York)

Echoing his equally brilliant, equally underappreciated compatriot and contemporary Simone Weil’s notion of the highest mountain-view of the mind, Daumal adds:

2e292385-dc1c-4cfe-b95e-845f6f98c2ec.png

Keep your eyes fixed on the way to the top, but don’t forget to look at your feet. The last step depends on the first. Don’t think you have arrived just because you see the peak. Watch your feet, be certain of your next step, but don’t let this distract you from the highest goal. The first step depends on the last.

In what may be the most elegant articulation of the essence of responsibility, applicable to everything from our smallest personal acts to our grandest generational choices that shape posterity’s social and ecological inheritance, Daumal writes:

2e292385-dc1c-4cfe-b95e-845f6f98c2ec.png

When you take off on your own, leave some trace of your passage that will guide your return: one rock set on top of another, some grass pierced by a stick. But if you come to a place you cannot cross or that is dangerous, remember that the trace you have left might lead the people following you into trouble. So go back the way you came and destroy any traces you have left. This is addressed to anyone who wants to leave traces of his passage in this world. And even without wanting to, we always leave traces. Answer to your fellow men for the traces you leave behind.

Do you know what a Mobius strip is?

Your scarf may be a Mobius strip….

From Wikipedia, Where you may see a Mobius strip

Applications[edit]

400px-Moebiusstripscarf.jpg

Mathematical art: a scarf designed as a Möbius strip

There have been several technical applications for the Möbius strip. Giant Möbius strips have been used as conveyor belts that last longer because the entire surface area of the belt gets the same amount of wear, and as continuous-loop recording tapes (to double the playing time). Möbius strips are common in the manufacture of fabric computer printer and typewriter ribbons, as they let the ribbon be twice as wide as the print head while using both halves evenly.[19]

A Möbius resistor is an electronic circuit element that cancels its own inductive reactance. Nikola Tesla patented similar technology in 1894:[20] "Coil for Electro Magnets" was intended for use with his system of global transmission of electricity without wires.

The Möbius strip is the configuration space of two unordered points on a circle. Consequently, in music theory, the space of all two-note chords, known as dyads, takes the shape of a Möbius strip; this and generalizations to more points is a significant application of orbifolds to music theory.[21][22]

In physics/electro-technology as:

  • A compact resonator with a resonance frequency that is half that of identically constructed linear coils[23]
  • An inductionless resistor[24]
  • Superconductors with high transition temperature[25]
  • Möbius resonator[26]

In chemistry/nano-technology as:

  • Molecular knots with special characteristics (Knotane [2], Chirality)
  • Molecular engines[27]
  • Graphene volume (nano-graphite) with new electronic characteristics, like helical magnetism[28]
  • A special type of aromaticity: Möbius aromaticity
  • Charged particles caught in the magnetic field of the Earth that can move on a Möbius band
  • The cyclotide (cyclic protein) kalata B1, active substance of the plant Oldenlandia affinis, contains Möbius topology for the peptide backbone.

Arts and entertainment[edit]

440px-Aion_mosaic_Glyptothek_Munich_W504.jpg

Ancient Roman mosaic depicting a Möbius strip

The Möbius strip principle has been used as a method of creating the illusion of magic. The trick, known as the Afghan bands, was very popular in the first half of the twentieth century. Many versions of this trick exist and have been performed by famous illusionists such as Harry Blackstone Sr. and Thomas Nelson Downs.[29][30]

In creative works[edit]

The universal recycling symbol (♲) design has its three arrows forming a Möbius loop. According to its designer Gary Anderson, "the figure was designed as a Mobius strip to symbolize continuity within a finite entity".[31]

On her Instagram series Skate Dial, Moore talks about organizing and supporting Black Lives Matter, and how to skating fits into this activism.
