Thursday 6/4 Tonight's Full Moon, Go to Google Images to read text. Song of the Moon Priscilla Jane Thompson Oh, a hidden power is in my breast,       A power that none can fathom;   I call the tides from seas of rest,   They rise, they fall, at my behest;   And many a tardy fisher’s boat,   I’ve torn apart and set afloat,        From out their raging chasm.   For I’m an enchantress, old and grave;         Concealed I rule the weather;   Oft set I, the lover’s heart a blaze,   With hidden power of my fulgent rays,   Or seek I the souls of dying men,   And call the sea-tides from the fen,       And drift them out together.   I call the rain from the mountain’s peak,       And sound the mighty thunder;   When I wax and wane from week to week,  The heavens stir...

Good quote for the morning. “If not us, then who? If not now then when?” John Lewis In these divine pleasures permitted to me of walks in the June night under moon and stars, I can put my life as a fact before me and stand aloof from its honor and shame. –Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–82)  The best films of 2020 So far https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20200702-the-best-films-of-2020-so-far?xtor=ES-213-[BBC%20Features%20Newsletter]-2020July10-[Culture%7c+Button] After Italian composer Ennio Morricone’s death at the age of 91, Arwa Haider explores how a score can make us rethink a movie – and picks out some classics, including Kung Fu Panda. https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20200702-the-best-films-of-2020-so-far?xtor=ES-213-[BBC%20Features%20Newsletter]-2020July10-[Culture%7c+Button] In the 2019 book Ennio Morricone: In His Own Words, he said that “Most of the time, people experience the music in a film as a subconscious suggestion… In other words,...

I am inspired by Theaster Gates, one Man, a potter, has invested his time and love, and changed a place. This is great. "How to make something out of Nothing"

Reshaping,  your wheel, your block, your city, any place, your schools, your government, We need this now more than ever. I listened to this. It is so inspirational. https://www.ted.com/talks/theaster_gates_how_to_revive_a_neighborhood_with_imagination_beauty_and_art?language=en “All my life, I’d been prepared,” he says. “My mom would say: ‘If you’re not ready when opportunity comes, then shame on you, because it may not come twice.’” Theaster Gates Ted Talks Profile Personal profile Theaster Gates is a potter whose ambitions stretch far beyond the wheel and the kiln. In Chicago, his leadership of artist-led spaces has catalyzed interest and excitement in a formerly neglected neighborhood, as he uses culture as a transformational weapon.  Why you should listen Theaster Gates is helping to define the future of artistic place-based efforts, in research and practice. Beginning with interventions in small-scale residences now known as  Dorchester Projects , Gates’ house...

Each has a different tonal colour, or “timbre”, which gives them their own unique characteristic sound. This is how we can naturally tell them apart when listening to music. As you develop as a singer, it is important to listen more analytically to the timbres, and therefore the pitches of different instruments, and how to tune your voice to each of them. https://www.musical-u.com/learn/...

Friday 5/22 I think if you listen closely In the sweet, glad days of spring, With the song of the brook, the breeze and the birds, You can hear the flowers sing. –Helen Isabel Moorhouse (b.1876) https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buttercup This day is a very special day in our world. There once was a beautiful girl named Rebecca who lived next door. Her family made a scholarship Fund for her and it is given out at Awards Night at the High School each year. All the proceeds from her Mom’s flower stand and gifts go to this fund. Faith in the Universe has helped us cope. She has been sewing Masks most recently, selling seeds, and there is a little Library there too.  We talk about Rebecca often, as if she is here with us, and yet, missing her will always be a part of our lives. She was the sweetest child and a wonderful person who loved Learning and Animals. She would come over in the Morning for me to braid her hair before school and spent lots of time...

Tuesday Perspective on this time from a New York Times Journalist ….”Whiplash. Going cold turkey. Zero to 60 except reversed. I have relied on a host of metaphors to think about my transition from perpetual motion to stillness, my world the size of a city block in many ways. It feels trivial to bemoan a temporary end to travel, but there’s more at stake than joy rides to a distant beach. We risk losing the connections we have spent centuries building with the world around us. With airplane fleets grounded and hotels shuttered, when travel resumes, there is no doubt it will look different.” https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/13/travel/missives-from-my-locked-down-friends-from-siberia-to-samarkand.html?campaign_id=24&emc=edit_tl_20200418&instance_id=17756&nl=travel-dispatch&regi_id=67240182&segment_id=25461&te=1&user_id=c54a3d3ff457b80d10f0624ed5bccb9d This link of interest below for negotiating in any situation, with kids especially. Friday 5/29 Weighing in: Nutrition, body image, and finding balance as a female athlete https://cyclingtips.com/2018/04/weighing-in-nutrition-body-image-and-finding-balance-as-a-female-athlete/ As a Mom of Girls I have seen two healthy girls with healthy outlooks on body image struggle with body image occasionally. I also struggled with this as an athlete in High School and College. I kept a food diary and exercise log. Both excellent ways to tune into your wellness.  This is good on Balance. Food is Fuel. I never weighed myself during high school and tried to maintain a diet very similar to before I became a serious cyclist. I stayed pretty healthy, but as I continued to make progress in my cycling career, I knew I wasn’t optimizing my diet for what I was asking my body to do. Becoming more engaged with my nutrition was initially driven by a desire to train harder. As my training load steadily increased, my diet hadn’t changed dramatically. I was still eating simil...
