PACIFIC MAIL STEAMSHIP COMPANY also ran some of the earliest steamboats on the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, between San Francisco, Sacramento, and Stockton. Domingo Marcucci who came from Philadelphia in the Pacific Mail steamship OREGON with a knocked-down steamboat in its hold, started a shipyard in San Francisco on September 18, 1849. It was located on the beach at Happy Valley, at the foot of Folsom Street, east of Beale Street. Marcucci's company assembled the CAPTAIN SUTTER in six weeks. Built for the ASPINWALL STEAM TRANSPORTATION LINE, owned by George W. Aspinwall, brother of William Henry Aspinwall, one of the founders of PACIFIC MAIL STEAMSHIP COMPANY.

Can it be cut?
What makes it strong?
Does it fray? What does fray mean? Look it up.

In the new American clipper, the Sovereign of the Seas, the ropes which form the running rigging are of cotton, which is not only capable of a tighter twist, but is not liable to become deteriorated by friction in the same degree as hempen cords. After they have been in use, too, for years, they can be sold for nearly as much as the original cost. These ropes are quite smooth, and run with great rapidity through the blocks. The sails also of this vessel are of cotton, two sets of cotton sails costing only the sum paid for one set of linen. From Google.

Built by Donald McKay for the California trade, the ship in
1851 reached San Francisco from New York, a voyage of 16,408 miles,
in 107 sailing days, a record it never equaled.

LEGENDARY SAILBOAT DESIGN
Lighter, Stronger, Faster celebrates the spirit of innovation by examining the unparalleled impact on marine design and engineering by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff and the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company.
One of the MIT’s earliest students, N. G. Herreshoff (MIT Class of 1870) set new standards in design and manufacturing, realizing remarkable influence and success over a 75-year career. His legendary design genius, engineering innovations and manufacturing efficiency led to the production of six America’s Cup winners and hundreds of other highly regarded vessels, the introduction of modern catamarans, the first torpedo boats for the U.S. Navy, and the first steam-powered fishing vessels in the U.S.

The truth is, children are born learning; it’s a survival skill that comes naturally to them, said Ellen Galinsky, author of Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs and chief science officer of the Bezos Family Foundation. “If families can use this as a chance to engage their kids in genuine learning, that could be transformational for kids’ development,” she says.
